Dig is a special that ran on Saturday morning a couple of times in 1972. It was the story of a boy and his dog who go on 'a journey into the Earth" guided by a large rock. I was nine going on ten when it aired, but it stuck with me. I remembered the main characters, and I remember the song "Take a midnight ride - down the rock bottom road - bumpty bumpty bump bump."

Dig
There are certain shows from my childhood that have stuck with me over the years despite not having seen them since. Ken Mundie's Hey Hey Hey, It's Fat Albert special is one of them. Fred Wolf's The Point is another. And then there's Dig.

Art of Schulz at Laguna College of Art & Design
Friend of FLIP Dave Pruiksma has announced the worldwide debut of The Minerd Collection - and exhibition of original Peanuts artwork by Charles Schulz as well as rare artwork from the TV specials. The show runs from January 23rd through February 14th, with a reception on February 7th, from 5 to 8 as part of the First Thursdays Art Walk in Laguna Beach.
Dave told FLIP, "This exhibit is free and open to the public. It is one of the largest collection of Peanuts and Schultz artwork in private ownership. The collection encapsulates Schulz's original strip art from every major area in the development of the Peanuts strip and even back to the earlier Lil' Folks panel cartoons. There is original artwork from numerous Animated television specials and features and original illustrations for magazines, such as TV guide and more. A rare exhibition, the owner's first, of one of the richest and most diverse collections of Charles Schultz and Peanuts artwork."

Way back in 1971 my Dad's animation studio at no. 13 Soho Square in London took on their biggest project to date - a TV adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The 22 minute TV special was produced by Chuck Jones and many scenes were animated by Ken Harris, one of Chuck's star animators from Road Runner days.

Drew Barrymore Gives Birth to Olive
In 1999, I had the honor to direct Matt Groening's Christmas special "Olive, the Other Reindeer". It was based on the book by J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh, who based the character Olive on their dog of the same name.
Last Wednesday, Drew Barrymore, who voiced the title character, gave birth to a girl and named her Olive! I, for one, think this is very cool. As the Christmas special was concerned, Olive was Drew. The charm in her voice brought so much character to that bizarre-looking little dog.
A few years after making the special, I saw Drew at the Dresden in Hollywood. I said, "Hey Olive!" and her face lit up. She clearly loves this character.
Congrats Drew! And Happy birthday, Olive!
